2024 AIR National Survey FAQs

• Q: Who should fill out the survey for my institution?

  A: We recommend the survey be completed by the person who leads the IR and/or IE office or the data/analytics function. 

• Q: If my institution has separate offices for IR and IE, which office leader should respond to the survey?

  A: Both! If your institution has separate IR and IE offices, we encourage both leaders to respond separately to the survey. In other words, there will be two responses from your institution. 

• Q: How long does it take to complete the survey?

  A: About 20 minutes.

• Q: How long does my institution have to complete the survey?

  A: Once the survey has launched, you will have approximately 6 to 8 weeks to complete it. 

• Q: Will my institution receive special access to data/reports for completing the survey?

  A: National trends reports will be provided. These reports will be valuable in leveraging resources for your office and/or for restructuring purposes.

• Q: Is there anything new or different this year as compared to past studies?

  A: Consistent with previous administrations, the 2024 study will collect information about office structures, leadership, staffing, resources, and activities. The 2024 study will also include new questions to gather insights within the following areas: 

  • The roles and responsibilities of institutional effectiveness offices as distinct and separate from those of institutional research offices. 
  • The adoption and use of artificial intelligence within IR/IE offices.
  • The maturity levels of the data function within institutions.
  • The prevalence of the “chief data officer” role and the core responsibilities

  Also, access to a separate benchmarking platform will not be available for purchase in 2024. 

• Q: Is benchmarking available for purchase?

  A: No. Access to a separate benchmarking platform will not be available for purchase in 2024. 

• Q: When will results from the 2024 AIR National Survey be released?

  A: Reports from the 2024 study will be released in the summer of 2025. The reports will be presented in a variety of formats (e.g., data briefs, posters, webinars) as a resource for AIR members and the broader higher education community. 

• Q: Will we need to complete the survey in one session?

  A: No. Simply click “Save and Continue” at the bottom of any page to save your progress and return later. This will generate an email with a link that allows you to jump back in when you’re ready. Note that you will not be able to go back and update any sections you completed prior to clicking “Save and Continue.”

• Q: Will we be able to update or access our responses once we’ve submitted the survey?

  A: No. Once you’ve submitted the survey, you will not be able to make changes or access your responses. If you realize you’ve made an error, please reach out to nationalsurvey@airweb.org.

• Q: Our institution’s contact has not received the invitation email to take the survey. What should we do?

  A: Ensure your contact  is opted in to receive study-related emails by checking their communication preferences for the AIR National Survey and, if necessary, updating and saving those preferences. If you need your invitation re-sent, simply email nationalsurvey@airweb.org.

• Q: Can we preview the survey questions?

  A: Yes. Questions can be viewed here.

• Q: I am the contact for my institution, but I haven’t received a survey invitation. Is there a way I can search for it?

  A: The initial email was sent October 30, 2024, from Darlena Jones (djones@airweb.org). If you are unable to locate this email, reach out to nationalsurvey@airweb.org for us to generate another.

• Q: Does AIR share data that might link to or identify specific respondents or institutions?

  A: AIR produces reports ONLY in the aggregate and disaggregated by U.S. region and institutional sector. We do not report individual institutional data.
