Published eight times a year, Research in Higher Education is the official peer-reviewed academic journal of the Association for Institutional Research. Research in Higher Education is published by Springer and is directed at those concerned with the functioning of postsecondary education, including two-year and four-year colleges, universities, and graduate and professional schools. Founded in 1973, Research in Higher Education contains research papers that generally, but not exclusively, stress empirical studies of colleges and universities. The journal describes its purpose as publishing scholarly works that contribute to the collective understanding of one or more institutions of higher education in order to aid faculty and administrators to make informed decisions, and to improve efficiency or effectiveness. Research in Higher Education has established itself as one of higher education's most selective journals with a manuscript acceptance rate ranging between 10% and 15%. The editor relies on a team of consulting editors to evaluate manuscripts that are submitted for publication consideration.
Research in Higher Education is of primary interest to institutional researchers and planners, faculty, college and university administrators, student personnel specialists, and behavioral scientists. Topics of particular interest are: administration and faculty; curriculum and instruction; student characteristics; alumni assessment; recruitment and admissions; prediction and student academic performance; campus climate; and retention, attrition and transfer. Brief notes of a methodological nature will also be considered for publication.
The April issue of Research in Higher Education is devoted to the best papers presented at the annual AIR Forum. In addition, there is a special section of selected issues of Research in Higher Education titled "Research and Practice" that focuses specifically on the connection between higher education research and the practice of institutional research. Contact the Editor for more information on this section.
Manuscripts are evaluated according to: significance in contributing new knowledge; technical adequacy; appropriateness for Research in Higher Education; and clarity of presentation. When published, manuscripts will be part of the journal copyright filed by the publisher.
